Mr. Phil Stover, another highly qualified Administrator who left the SDUSD during the current Elementary School Superintendent Cindy Martens’ “Brain Drain“, has been selected as Interim Superintendent of the Sweetwater Union School District.
Mr. Stover represents the 3rd San Diego Unified Assistant or Deputy Superintendent (along with numerous highly credentialed, experienced Principals and Senior Administrators) passed over by the selection of current Superintendent Cindy Marten with no community or SDUSD Stakeholder input.
Unfortunately this is just another sad reminder that Elementary School Superintendent Marten – with barely 4 years of ELEMENTARY Principal Experience and NO District Administrative Experience was chosen over:
Phil Stover – Interim Superintendent Sweetwater Union School District: From the Times of San Diego article: “Stover has been in education for 40 years. Besides his executive role at San Diego Unified, he has assessed and designed management programs for more than 120 school districts, private schools and colleges.
Dr. Nellie Meyer – Superintendent, Mt. Diablo Unified School District: From the MDUSD Board of Education letter posted on Claycord: Superintendent Dr. Meyer served as a middle school teacher, high school teacher, dean of students, vice principal, principal, Assistant Superintendent of High Schools, Chief High School Improvement Officer, Executive Director of Dropout Prevention, Interim Chief Elementary School Improvement Officer, Interim Deputy Superintendent, and Deputy Superintendent of Academics
Dr. Sid Salazar – Superintendent, Alvord Unified School District: From his LinkedIn Profile: Principal of Sweetwater Union High School for 16 years, SDUSD Assistant Superintendent for 6 years.
Congratulations Mr. Stover…we KNOW you have the credentials to do a GREAT job for ALL the Sweetwater Union School District Stakeholders!
Please remember….We Miss Your Skills and Collaboration…and those of your fellow REAL Superintendent colleagues!
But given the poor leadership and sad state of the Marten SDUSD Administration…
You ALL obviously made the right choice.
I think the reason our current school board is letting go of such talented individuals is that highly qualified and caring administrators WILL NOT stand for our district’s current state of affairs; they would DEMAND a fair and responsive system that TRULY meets the educational needs of ALL our students and communities

Sorry to say. These people above may be qualified as you see it, but they are not! They are only in education for the Money and nothing else! Stover instigated the quest to sell school property. If you look at the budget analysis of the past 5 years of sdusd with these people at the helm they spent more money on not so good things in education than anyone before or since. Glad they are gone and hope they don’t ruin other school districts.

Francesca – I respect your perspective…I just had a much different experience with them…especially in the collaboration and transparency areas. Plus it is very obvious from all the Marten blunders that she has no administrative experience and is in way over her head in this position…and is afraid of anyone with more experience except her inner circle of cronies.

Three more come to mind, Frank.
Dr. Marian Kim Phelps, now superintendent of Westminster School District in Orange Co. She a former Area Superintendent.
Dr. Rupi Boyd, current superintendent of Soledad Unified and another Area Superintendent here.
Biggest loss to the children she worked with, Mitzi Lizarraga, the amazing principal at SCPA.
I think the school board owes an explanation to the community. Why would they choose a personal friend, Barrera’s and Barnett’s, rather than an experienced and qualified leader. So wrong.

One more, Frank.
Dr. David Lorden, Superintendent of Lakeside School District.
To Francesca: Are you a different Francesca than the one on VOSD?
I like her comments and she substantiates them with facts.
“Only in it for the money?” How would you know that?
“Spent more money on not so good things?” Any examples?
“Hope they don’t ruin other school districts?” Come on…no substance..
Whether these are perfect people or not, they are people with experience and credentials. Merit promotion it’s called. Employees promoted because of their knowledge and ability.
What’s happened to SDUSD, now run by someone with no experience or credentials, should be a crime. The school board did the wrong thing.

The biggest mistake San Diego Unified made was driving Vernon Moore out. He would make a great superintendent. I left San Diego Unified after 28 years this past August. I was passed over for admin jobs many times for younger, less qualified and less experienced people – some of whom have gotten themselves into trouble for gross mismanagement.
