Thank you to the San Diego Chapter of the NAACP for the following letter – “SD Unified’s Online Learning Plan is Terrible”…another strong example of the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) Education Pandemic—

The SDUSD Sandimic

As with the NAACP letter posted last week on District Deeds, we agree COMPLETELY with the points that Ms. Maxwell makes in her rebuttal to the Voice of San Diego article titled “Grades Can Only Go Up: New Details on San Diego Unified’s Online Learning Plan” by Will Huntsberry and Ashly McGlone.

In the article Mr. Huntsberry and Ms. McGlone did their best to get a straight answer out of corrupt SDUSD Board of Education Trustee Richard “Tricky Dick” Barrera.

As usual, Tricky Dick made the interview task of Mr. Huntsberry and Ms. McGlone impossible with a lot of empty bloviation and a refusal to give an honest answer to simple questions as Ms. Maxwell alludes to in the NAACP letter.

For example:

Barrera was unable to provide detailed information on the three (online learning) models available to teachers.

Teachers still have lots of questions about how online learning will work, said Kisha Borden, president of the local teacher’s union, the San Diego Education Association.

“We are not going to be spending an entire school day on a computer, so what is that going to look like? What are the expectations of time spent?” she asked.

Barrera was not able to provide a detailed answer to that question

In other words, on the Friday before launch, Tricky Dick refuses to provide Teachers or Families exactly how online learning will occur!!!

It appears that every SDUSD school is left to deploy Student Learning via whatever method they might choose…a recipe for TOTAL INEQUITY and a Student learning disaster!

But it gets worse…

Tricky Dick DID have one STRONG answer….that this online learning plan is, as Ms. Maxwell describes, “Terrible”  and that is not going to BEGIN to meet the legal educational rights of some of the neediest SDUSD Special Education, ELL’s and other Students:

Barrera acknowledged special education services would be diminished from their usual standard.

“We know for students with disabilities in particular and English learners and a lot of other students, the best of what we can do online will never be good enough,” he said.

The Coronavirus educational Sandemic has exposed how the TERRIBLE, illegal decision 6 years ago to appoint Cindy Marten has come back to haunt and harm ALL SDUSD Students and Employees.

What more could we expect from the SDUSD…a District with an unqualified, inexperienced Superintendent like Cindy Marten who, despite her $330,000 salary, $4.9 billion in Prop S and Z grant money and a $1.4 billion annual budget not only neglected to create any semblance of a Disaster Plan…plan that included deployment of online learning in the case of a school closure emergency

Instead the $330,000 Marten has been stumbling and bumbling around for almost a month without even the School Board knowing the answers to simple deployment plans.

The Tricky Dick interview clearly exposed:

  • TERRIBLE LEADERSHIP and COMMUNICATION – Lies, empty promises and ZERO Transparency causing total operational management confusion at all levels.
  • TERRIBLE FOOD DISTRIBUTION PLANNING – No effective project management or plan oversight
  • TERRIBLE COMPUTER/INTERNET DISTRIBUTION that discriminates against economically disadvantaged Families.
  • TERRIBLE SLOW, DISORGANIZED DEPLOYMENT – 5 weeks, 13 instructional days…and counting.
  • TERRIBLE INEQUITY AND STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES to be expected with ZERO accountability from all levels of this useless Marten and Barrera District administration.

This proves the words of Ms. Maxwell and the NAACP are true- that “SD Unified’s Online Learning Plan is Terrible”.

Because of this proof  –

District Deeds DEMANDS that the corrupt San Diego Unified School District IMMEDIATELY provide FULL transparency via a daily report on how many Students and Families by demographic category and by school HAVE and HAVE NOT not been provided computer and internet access and FULL Transparency proving that ALL School Sites are deploying remote learning the same way!

Without that daily report, SDUSD Stakeholders will never know how many of the neediest Student groups and schools are being left behind by the terribly unqualified Cindy Marten.
