Waiting for Godot Duval

Introduction

Since our District Deeds Sunday Reads – March 8, 2020: Special Coronavirus Edition post we have been tracking the progress of the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) in addressing the horrible risk of the Coronavirus to continued Student education.

We were alerted to that risk, like many Californians, through the State of Emergency declared by California Governor Newsom on Wednesday, March 4, 2020…approximately 5½ weeks ago.

In that March 8th post we alerted our readers of preparations being recommended and implemented by school districts nationwide compared to the paltry efforts by the SDUSD under incompetent SDUSD Superintendent Cindy Marten.

Since that time we have been having the same conversation with our readers trying to get the SDUSD to take meaningful action – even nicknaming the horrible lack of effort and planning as the “SDUSD Coronavirus Educational Sandimic”

Also since that time we have been searching for other school districts in the United States that have a similar challenge in implementing distance learning in a large diverse schools district with over 100,000 Students.

That’s when we found Duval County Public Schools.

Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) is a K – 12 school district with 130,000 Students and 8,200 Teachers based in Jacksonville, Florida.

Duval County Public Schools was able to effectively deploy fully graded distance learning in 3 days!

From the moment we discovered DCPS and began discussing the Coronavirus educational impacts on SDUSD Students with our readers we have been waiting for the Duval distance learning tactics and strategies to be implemented in the SDUSD.

This waiting for the Duval distance learning model to finally arrive in the Marten led SDUSD reminded us of a familiar phrase…”Waiting for Godot”.

This became the birth of District Deeds series “Waiting for Godot Duval”

The premise of this series is based on the play by Samuel Beckett titled “Waiting for Godot” described  in Wikipedia as follows:

A play by Samuel Beckett, in which two characters, Vladimir (Didi) and Estragon (Gogo), wait for the arrival of someone named Godot who never arrives, and while waiting they engage in a variety of discussions…

Over the coming weeks we will be discussing this comparison between effective DCPS and the dysfunctional SDUSD with our readers, all the while sadly knowing that “Duval” will never arrive.

Meanwhile we will fill the gap between what ALL Students need from Marten and what they will actually receive …in other words…“Waiting for Godot Duval”.

Buckle Up!!!
