Who Gets Hurt When High School Diplomas Are Not Created Equal?
Quote from Article:
A new study finds that U.S. schools hand out 98 different kinds of high school diplomas, and 51 of them fail to prepare students adequately for college or careers. A disproportionate share of those weaker diplomas go to students of color and students from low-income families.
The uneven quality in high school credentials begs for attention in the national conversation about high school completion, even as the country boasts an all-time-high graduation rate of 83.2 percent, the report says.
“High school graduation rates are an important but incomplete indicator of success. In addition to measuring whether students receive a diploma, it also is critical to gauge the value of the diploma itself,” says “Paper Thin,” the study by the Alliance for Excellent Education. “Allowing students to walk across the stage at graduation with paper-thin diplomas—that do not signify readiness for postsecondary education—is a disservice both to students and to the economic potential of the United States.”
District Deeds Synopsis:
A good article by a biased source and a great study defining the truth about College and Career Readiness in the United States. The Study is definitely worth reading.
Here is the Study: DiplomaPathways
College and Career Readiness has been a standard and continuous part of San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) Propaganda terminology since Supt. Cindy Marten has been appointed by her crony Trustees Richard Barrera, John Lee Evans, Kevin Beiser, Mike McQuary, and Sharon Whitehurst-Payne.
Unfortunately the fake SDUSD graduation rate and related fake SDUSD College and Career Readiness has been exposed as a lie by District Deeds and other San Diego news sources. The article should inspire SDUSD Stakeholders to dig deeper and identify whether their school is truly delivering what the SDUSD and Supt. Marten Propaganda Machine has promised.
Suit: Detroit Schoolchildren Denied Right to Literacy
Quote from Article:
Detroit — Seven Detroit schoolchildren, represented by a California public interest law firm, sued state officials Tuesday in what attorneys say is an unprecedented attempt to establish that literacy is a U.S. constitutional right.
The suit, brought against Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and several education officials, claims the state has functionally excluded Detroit children from the state’s educational system. It seeks class-action status and several guarantees of equal access to literacy, screening, intervention, a statewide accountability system and other measures.
District Deeds Synopsis:
This article shows that inspired communities that are not receiving the level of literacy for their Students required by District, County, State and Federal law have the rights to sue for that right.
Based on the obvious financial and operational mismanagement of the current SDUSD Superintendent and Board of Education, is there any doubt that students and families within the SDUSD have similar rights violations that should be litigated?

CA’s ESSA Plan Finalized but Doesn’t Address All Questions
Quote from Article:
One of the biggest hurdles facing California is aligning the performance indicators in the LCAPs—which are district-based, with those of ESSA—which are school-based.
The issue has most prominently come to light as the state considers how it will identify the lowest performing schools for federal accountability purposes. So far, the board has decided to delay finalizing the system, but will maintain attention on the indicators as defined by the LCAPs.
The Torlakson memo conceded the point. “The State Plan does not describe a number of important activities or aspects of California’s ongoing work to support students and schools within its public education system because they are not responsive to the specific prompts included in the State Plan template,” he said.
District Deeds Synopsis:
How typical.
The State of California Department of Education is complicit in refusing to hold individual schools accountable for student success and allowing corrupt California School District Superintendents and School Board Trustees (like the SDUSD) to bury their failing schools within the morass of general district wide measurements.
As usual, Students are victims of the State and District corruption.
That leads us to our Quote of the Week…
“The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche
