The support of some of San Diego Unified’s neediest Students is being destroyed.
District Deeds has learned from our contacts within the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) that ALL English Language Support Teachers (ELST’s) and ALL Office of Language Acquisition Office (OLA) will be “excessed” and receive “pink slips” next month.
District Deed has published numerous blog posts regarding the fact that the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) and Supt. Cindy Marten are never afraid of victimizing the neediest and most vulnerable Students and families since they do not have the resources to fight back.

If a Student of color has a need or a problem, be it with sexual harassment or corporal punishment or educational supports like English Language Support Teachers, the Supt. Cindy Marten administration is good at spouting platitudes but short on delivering the services and protections needed for Student success, safety and achievement. And when budget cuts are required due to Marten’s financial mismanagement blunders, those Students of color are the first to take the cuts.
District Deeds spoke out the last time Marten eliminated ELST’s but Marten claimed she had a “Plan”.
In that post we quoted Marten as saying that firing ELST’s ” makes it look like we have walked away”
Well now, by firing all the rest of the ELST’s AND the OLA Support Teachers, it doesn’t just look like you are “walking away”, you have actually walked away!
Apparently that plan was just a lie.
Almost a year ago, Voice of San Diego published an article titled “The District’s Ambitious New Plan to Serve English-Learners” that mentioned the ridiculous approach of the Cindy Marten administration:
Marten’s goal is to have every teacher, throughout the district, trained in these methods. When everything is in place, there will be no more long-term English-learners. Young students will be “reclassified,” or considered fluent, by the time they get to middle school.
That’s the hope. It’s a work in progress. At this stage, the OLA is making sure its teams are in place and kids are being tested on time. – Voice of San Diego
Apparently that “plan” was also a lie.
The sad thing is that by firing ELST’s and OLA Support Teachers, the ridiculous “hope” of “no more long-term English learners” may actually come true.
There will be many less “learners” of all kinds since many families sick of the injustice will just move their students to Charter Schools due to the financial and educational mismanagement of the Superintendent.

English Learners, especially newcomers and those with disabilities need specialized instruction. Who will be providing it? I hope all of us who care about students, especially about students whose parents face additional hurdles when advocating for their children, can get together and march in protest to let the district know that we’ve had enough of their mismanagement and enough of their mistreatment of the most vulnerable children, families and communities. Let’s organize!

Cindy Martin and the Board just love oppressing, attacking, and denying resources to the most vulnerable whether they are English-learning students or school custodians. SHAME ON HER AND SHAME ON THEM!
