District Deeds wishes ALL San Diego Unified School District Stakeholders a happy and safe Labor Day 2022 Weekend!
Here is an excellent history of Labor Day provided by the Library of Congress.
Many Americans may think Labor Day as the end of summer or a day of rest, parades, picnics, or store sales. Labor Day is so much more. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 at the behest of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union pushed other organizations to follow and by 1894 23 other states had adopted the holiday. In 1894 Eugene V. Debs led members of the American Railway Union on strike in what is known as the Pullman strike. This strike had major economic implications and soon President Grover Cleveland declared it a federal crime and deployed troops to break it up. Violence erupted, and two men were killed. As a way to calm tensions after the death strike, on June 28, 1894 Labor Day as a legal holiday on the first Monday of September was approved.
There are a number of books on Labor Day and the history of labor in the United States while the Library’s Manuscript Reading Room has President Cleveland’s papers. Also, the National Archives has a nice online photographic exhibit called The Way We Worked that documents the clothing, locales, conditions, and conflict in our workplaces.
For Labor Day 2022 we are featuring 3 quotes relevant to ALL SDUSD Stakeholders challenging the oppressive and unethical power of the corrupt San Diego Unified School District Senior Leadership:
“Genius begins great works; labor alone finishes them.” –
District Deeds Translation: We have the Labor. Now we just need to hire/elect a “genius” to “begin great works” to replace the corrupt, self serving blockheads in the SDUSD Senior Leadership.
“I am opposing a social order in which it is possible for one man who does absolutely nothing that is useful to amass a fortune of hundreds of millions of dollars, while millions of men and women who work all the days of their lives secure barely enough for a wretched existence.” – Eugene V. Debs
District Deeds Translation:
Would it be like corrupt, self serving SDUSD Trustee Richard “Tricky Dick” Barrera who votes to assign billlion dollar SDUSD Bond Construction projects while historically maintaining close election contribution ties with the same construction industry?
Or how about appointing an unqualifed, no talent crony to a six figure salary as Superintendent that will be his stooge?
“Power concedes nothing without demands.” – Frederick Douglass
District Deeds Translation:
Exactly why the SDUSD needs STRONG unions to “DEMAND” SDUSD employee rights against oppressive, corrupt Senior SDUSD Management!
Exactly why we need the same type of “Union” for SDUSD Parents and Taxpayers to “DEMAND” STUDENT educational rights for our children!
