Over the past 10 months we have been on an exhaustive quest to fulfill our 2023 “HAT Trick” New Years Resolution for holding the San Diego Unified School District to the reasonable, justifiable, and critical standard of Honesty, Accountability and Transparency:
To fulfill that quest we have recently profiled the experiences of San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) “Speak Your Truth” Whistleblowers and public comment from SDUSD Stakeholders in Board of Education (BOE) meetings.
While preparing a post this week with another SDUSD “Speak Your Truth” Whistleblower we found an article in K-12 Dive that inadvertently highlights a “targeting” symptom of this horrible SDUSD educational and operational mismanagement.
That symptom is Chronic Absenteeism. We will be supplying “Key Phrase” and “District Deeds Interpretation” to translate these concepts to the SDUSD dysfunctional reality.

How to fight chronic absenteeism?
Target students, parents and teachers.
District-level strategies based on communication, empathy and relationships can help motivate all three groups to support attendance.

District Deeds SDUSD Interpretation from “Speak Your Truth” Whistleblower Targeted Teacher statement on October 15, 2023:
In my career spanning twenty plus years I had never received any negative evaluations and only a couple of letters of warning from principals. From this principal, however, more than a dozen letters and several negative evaluations were written about me in just three years.
Based on all the feedback we have received from SDUSD Stakeholders, the title of the K-12 Dive article is ACCURATE!
Unfortunately that SDUSD Senior Leadership “targeting” is bereft of any semblance of “communication, empathy and relationships”
The testimony above proves that the SDUSD IS actually TARGETING Students, Parents and Teachers, just not in the positive way the K-12 Dive Article suggests. The way that the SDUSD has decided to “Fight Chronic Absenteeism” is actually to VINDICTIVELY “Target students, parents and teachers”
And as the SDUSD “Targeted Teacher” eloquently said:
I will never teach again, and to this day I have trichotillomania that resulted from the bullying I endured. The principal’s abusive actions were hushed up because I took that sweet deal, and now this person continues to act as principal, costing the district who knows how much more in hush money dollars, and costing teachers who knows how much more in psychological damage.
This horrible interpretation of malicious “targeting” of Teachers by the SDUSD actually WORSENS the overall chronic absenteeism rate and also has the negative side effect of driving those same Students and ethical, highly qualified Teachers AWAY from the SDUSD to charter schools and other K-12 educational resources.
In this post, through brave Whistleblower and public comment statements, we have shown the complete negligence and incompetence of SDUSD central office and school site leadership to actually fulfill the false promises made in repetitive, redundant and relentless lies regarding a tiny “drop” in chronic absenteeism spread by the SDUSD $1.4 billion backed propaganda (Quality Assurance/Legal) department.
As SDUSD Trustee and “Liar in Chief” Tricky Dick Barrera said to the Voice of San Diego in a recent article:
“I don’t think that we know enough to know what drove the chronic absenteeism rate so high, and I also don’t think we know enough to know what’s bringing it back down,” Barrera said.

A quote that represents the epitome of Trustee Tricky Dick Barrera corruption, ignorance and incompetence since he was elected in 2008..
However Tricky Dick Barrera is right about one thing: He doesn’t EVER “know” or think about learning loss damage to SDUSD Students and Education Stakeholders. His political and trade/teacher union union donation goals always come first before ANY damage to Student learning and achievement.
Just about as close to a REAL confession you will get from this proven liar.
This SDUSD propaganda to avoid chronic absenteeism accountability through hiding the truth is ALSO the epitome of violating the District Deeds 2023 HAT Trick Resolution of Honesty, Accountability and Transparency.
And as long as Barrera, Superintendent “Cryin’ Lamont” and the rest of the deaf, dumb and intentionally blind SDUSD Senior leadership remain in power, that level of dishonesty, lack of accountability and zero transparency will be the RULE for all SDUSD Stakeholders rather than the exception.
A rule at least for the Teachers and Students who unfortunately are forced to stay in the SDUSD, one of the most dysfunctional and corrupt school districts in the United States.
