District Deeds Bottom Line, SDUSD Trustee Cody Petterson, SDUSD Trustee Richard Barrera, SDUSD Trustee Shana Hazan, Speak Your Truth
Nine months ago on New Years Day, Sunday, January 1, 2023, District Deeds made the 2023 “HAT Trick” New Years Resolution for holding the San Diego Unified School District to the reasonable, justifiable, and critical standard of Honesty, Accountability and Transparency:
Since that time we have provided our readers the HAT Trick Handbook for Uniform Complaints and spent Summer, 2023 breaking down the three components with documented proof of horrible SDUSD performance.
As an excellent example of these continuous untrustworthy actions by SDUSD senior leadership we found a recent San Diego Union Tribune (SDUT) news features that clearly expose a typical “SDUSD HAT Trick” violation in action.
Here we go!
DD NOTE: The article we feature from the SDUT requires a subscription to access.
SDUT Feature Category: COMMENTARY
Opinion: Keeping students safe and supporting families are San Diego Unified’s top priorities
“Hazan is San Diego Unified School District Board of Education vice president and lives in Kensington. Petterson is a trustee with the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education, and lives in La Jolla.”
Key Hazan and Petterson Excerpt:
“engaging no-cost learning“?!?
Really?!?
The “engaging” component can be eliminated completely by the historically horrible SDUSD chronic absenteeism, shrinking enrollment, teacher departures and massively declining test scores NOT related to Covid.
The claim of “no-cost learning” is even MORE ridiculous and MORE damning to these two Trustee “Tricky Dick” Barrera sycophants.
Trustee Hazan claims she resides in Kensington where median home sale prices are $1.5 MILLION dollars.
Trustee Petterson claims he resides in La Jolla where recent median home sale prices are $1.8 MILLION dollars.
According to an inewsource article from the 2022 election titled “Candidates declare victory in San Diego Unified school board races” where both Hazan and Petterson are quoted, an additional SDUSD item regarding School Bond Measure U was ALSO included:
Under a subtitle in the same inewsource article labeled “Measure U likely to be approved” is the following:
“The bond measure, which requires a majority vote of at least 55%, will provide more than $3.2 billion to improve San Diego Unified school facilities. Of the $3.2 billion, $296 million will pay for security and safety improvements, a big selling point for the proposal.
It’s the district’s fourth bond on the ballot since 2008, totaling $11.5 billion in borrowing.”
Since they both claim there is “no-cost learning” in the SDUSD, how do do Hazan and Petterson think that the $11.5 billion bond borrowing is being paid for if it is “no cost”?
Where do they think the salaries of the “compassionate educators and health professionals” comes from?
If Hazan owns a $1.5 million home in Kensington or Petterson owns a $1.8 million dollar home in La Jolla, where do they think the money they pay towards their property taxes for their homes goes? Do they NOT look at their Property Tax Bill?
Just in case they missed it, here is a sample of that bill with the SDUSD taxes circled in RED:
District Deeds Bottom Line
There can only be two plausible reasons for such a misleading and irresponsible “Opinion” by the two newest SDUSD Board of Education Trustees:
Plausible reason #1:
Hazan and Petterson do not own a home or pay any property taxes so they are completely unaware that those taxes, plus other State and Federal taxes, actually pay for those Bond Measures and the “compassionate educators and health professionals”.
Or
Plausible reason #2:
Hazan and Petterson are liars and have, for pure self serving political purposes, pledged undying allegiance and subservience to corrupt Trustee Richard “Tricky Dick” Barrera in order to suck up his political clout and get re-elected in 2026.
Per Plausible Reason #1, being completely unaware of how the SDUSD is funded after a year on the job completely disqualifies them for the Trustee position and they should immediately resign or be removed from office.
Per Plausible Reason #2., being willfully ignorant and/or spouting lies to SDUSD Stakeholders via a commentary to mislead and divert attention away from chronic poor educational performance completely disqualifies them for the Trustee position and they should immediately resign or be removed from office.
Lying to SDUSD Stakeholders is a complete violation of the “Ethics” component of their SDUSD oath of office and the “Honesty” component of the 2023 District Deeds HAT Trick resolution.
District Deeds Bottom Line: Both plausible reasons could be true and both are ultimately damning to the reputations and the viability of both Hazan and Petterson to complete their terms in office.
For lying to their constituents and/or being totally incompetent, they both are a disgrace and should both be ashamed of themselves for betraying all the honest SDUSD Stakeholders in the La Jolla and Kensington communities that voted for them and that they serve..
District Deeds “Speak Your Truth” Update
On August 27, 2023 we launched a new initiative in our post titled “2023/2024 – District Deeds 10th School Year…NEW “Speak Your Truth” Posting Opportunity for ALL SDUSD Stakeholders!!!” where we asked for the real life experiences of San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) Parents, Teachers, Students, Staff and Taxpayers.
Here is the “Speak Your Truth” initiative definition from that post:
“Speak Your Truth” CONTINUES to inspire honesty and bravery with SDUSD Teachers, Staff, Parents and Students and given us additional insight into the deep fear of SDUSD retribution by employees in the toxic SDUSD work environment.
THANK YOU to ALL the brave SDUSD Stakeholders who continue to share their stories with us and provide deep insights into the ongoing SDUSD dysfunctional work and education environment.
THANK YOU to Benjamin Franklin for letting us paraphrase you.
Now for our Quote of the Week dedicated to those courageous “Speak Your Truth” Stakeholders:
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. – Nelson Mandela
